The Craft

Blue Pottery — quietly extraordinary.

Jaipur Blue Pottery is the only ceramic tradition in the world that contains no clay. The body is built entirely from quartz — the same mineral that forms glass — which gives the finished piece its luminous translucent quality. The craft arrived in Jaipur from Persia in the late 18th century and has been refined here for over 200 years.

Each plate is hand-painted free-hand in a single sitting with mineral cobalt pigment. No two pieces are identical.

How it's made

From raw earth to finished piece — 6 steps.

  1. Quartz paste

Quartz powder, fuller’s earth and gum are kneaded into a smooth white paste

  2. Hand-shape

The paste is shaped over a mould — no wheel, the body stays uniform and thin

  3. Tin glaze

A bright white tin glaze is poured and rested for two days to dry slowly

  4. Free-hand paint

Mineral cobalt is painted free-hand in a single sitting — no outline

  5. Single firing

The plate is fired once at low temperature in a brick-and-mud kiln for 24 hours

  6. Signed

The maker signs the reverse — each plate is unrepeatable

The plate arrived in exquisite packaging — five layers deep. The cobalt is even more luminous in person than in the photos. A small miracle.

Shipped to Seoul in 6 days, fully duty-paid. The hand-painted detail is extraordinary. You can see the brush hairs in the pigment up close.

Bought as a wedding gift. The recipient texted me a photo of it on her wall the same day. Made my year.
